radiator durablilty and risks

I have a 1988 240, with 162,400 miles on it or so. The car has the original platic radiator. I have heard that these are not very durable. I'm wondering if I should start looking at the metal three bay radiator to prevent a possible headgasket problem. Also, If I were to replace it, are the IPD metal ones a good way to go?

Thanks, and Happy Bricking!
