Adding third brake light--suggestions? caveats? 1985

Looking at adding third (high-mount ) brake light to older vehicle (admittedly, not a Volvo--an '85 Dodge pickup), and can use suggestions on wiring, relays, etc. Last time I did this, on an '81 240, it resulted in a constant bulb failure light; maybe because I added it in parallel to the existing brake light circuit and dropped the net resistance ? TIA
