could be a number of things, but it sounds electrical (assuming the car runs fine once started)
grounds (especially battery) would be the very first place to look. i had a bmw 5-series that did the exact thing your car is doing and it was the negative battery cable. replaced corroded wire with a heavy-duty wire for $3. i dont actually know where all the pertinent grounds are on my volvo (i just got it)
check all fuses (you have done this of course already right?)
have you checked to see if the car is getting spark and fuel? simple tests, check FAQ. should lead you in the right direction. a more detailed description of the no-start condition would help too.
