1981 GL (240) ((MANUAL)) can't get car in gear, please help

You didn't mention how the clutch was working. Did it feel like you had pressure when you pushed down? It's possible the clutch is bad and just slipping. Check you rear transmission mount. If that lets go you can't put the transmission is 2nd or 4th.

If it is the clutch new replace the throw out bearing when you change the clutches
