Alternator question 86 740

I seem to have gotten myself into a little trouble, nothing too serious but I need some help. I am purchasing a 1986 740 from a friend. He thought that there was a problem with the alternator and removed it from the car. Several weeks later I took the alternator to be tested and rebuilt IF NECESSARY. Of course they just rebuilt it and never called me back. So we started to connect everything up and found a problem with wiring. He had previously noticed some fried wiring that we replaced with splices. I now believe that it wasn't a short that fried the wiring but wire rot that appears to be a common thing on this model.

While hooking everything up we ran into a problem with the battery temperature sensor. We could not find where to hook it up. I purchased a Chiltons and it wasn't much help. From research here and on the web I gather that this sensor is not always used and can be omitted without problems.

What I need - I have three wires to connect, One ground wire (completely replaced), one thick gauge red wire (from starter according to wiring diagram in Chiltons), and one thing gauge red wire (that had a spade connector with a spade that had a 90 degree bend plugged into it)that goes to the instrument cluster. Both red wires have been spliced with new plugs to repair the rotted wire and insulation.

1) Do I assume that the battery temp sensor was never connected and my friend is incorrect in thinking he removed it? Or did the shop mess up and give me the wrong alternator back?

2) Wire hookup. The thick guage red wire goes to the biggest post on the alternator? The post is marked nearby with B+, also near the regulator.

3) The small gauge red wire (instrument cluster) Does this connect to the post marked D+ near the main wire connection or to the spade terminal simply marked +? If it connects to D+ why is there a spade connector? Why not just use a ring connector, less chance for something to go wrong.

4) Ground connection. Does the ground connection just connect to one of the two long posts? There is not a nut to hold it on with, did the shop just forget to add one?

Misc info...
1986 Volvo 710GL, B230 engine, from looking at the back of the alternator and the Chiltons 3-11 it looks like a Bosch N1 14V 90A 20(except for a black plastic piece to prevent short?), there are no stickers or model numbers on the alt that I can find except for 9611 stamped on the back of the alt.

I know I may have more serious wire rot to deal with, I just want to get it running and home to work on it.

Thanks for any advice.
