Random engine rough running and shaking 700

If someone has had this similar problem I would appreciate some diagnostic advice.

I have a 760T '85 that was running great until this problem came up:

The engine suddenly acts similar to the symptoms of running out of gas. The engine begins to shake a lot and the engine sputters and barely idles.

During this episode it will respond to throttle but will remain weak and not deliver enough power to drive. The first time the engine did this it was after sitting parked for about an hour. I thought it was out of gas (since fuel gauge is not working). I then tapped on the idle air motor to see if that was the problem (has been in the past). But no response. The car then started up after a few tries and ran fine for weeks.

The second time it happened it stranded me, and I was sure it was not the idle air motor since this time because I took it out and bypassed it with a hose (restricted by a clamp to regulate air flow). The engine fired up, thinking the hose bypass solved it but it died again after about 20 minutes of running and didn't start up until 3 days later after being towed home.

Now the car is parked and the engine will alternate from running as new to totally useless. The exhaust does have a gassy smell to it, and the plugs are black carbon but not wet.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do after I:

Check all engine connections and grounds.
The Fuel pressure regulator
Engine Temp Sensor.

Thanks,
