Replacing gear doesn't fix odometer

This probably won't help, by my odometer strangely stopped working when I installed a new stereo. A year goes by, and I end up putting in a nother stereo, and lo and behold the odometer works again. I checked all the wiring umpteen times and found no problems, so I suppose the old stereo just had gremlins or something in it.

Not helpful, but a strange anecdote to lighten the day, perhaps?
