Yes there is a reason. One is for ease, not that its terribly hard to access anyway. Another is cooler oil, due to the fact that the filter is not soaking up as much engine heat, plus a larger filter (V8), and because you can add almost a whole extra quart of oil. All of this equals cooler oil and cooler oil is a self explanatory reason.
