"Ole' Blue" is an '88 240DL 4-door sedan with 290,000 miles on her. Lately, her starter's taken to unpredictably "whirling" or "spinning" on the FIRST ignition attempt. Thus far, the engine cranks right up the second time -- almost as if the first failure never really happened. However, these episodes have been occuring more frequently during the last couple of weeks, and I'm worried I'll be stranded somewhere shortly.
Can anyone diagnose what's probably happening? What I should do? Likely repair costs? Or anything else I should know about this. This is the original starter.
