I would thik that if the engine is not running, after a few seconds the fuel pump relay shuts of the pump since no fuel is going to the engine. I suppose that sticking a short piece of rubber hose on the end of the cut metal line on the tank side and pinching it with wise grips could shut off the flow from the tank and help in filling the jerrycans in an orderly fashion .
I could always drive the car with the pinhole until the tank is just about empty and keep two or three jerrycans at hand or else siphon it all before cutting the line.I am still curious as to how deep the return line goes into the tank.
