No air cond going uphill 900 1992

Driving about 500 miles in the spouse's 965 in near-100-degree weather, noticed that the air conditioner quits blowing cold on upslopes and when accelerating on the flat. Blows fine and cold going downhill and at constant speed on the level. Too much to hope for simple loose wire? Can anybody tell me where to start looking and what this symptom presages? Car has only 137K miles on it.
