There is a pick up tube in the fuel tank that includes a section of hose. This hose over time degrades and gets holes, gaps, or splits in it. When this happens it can no longer pick up the fuel because air enters the line when the fuel level drops below the hose section. The repair is simple enough- you just replace the bad section with new fuel hose. The real work is getting the prepump, sending unit tank insert on the bench to work on it.
While it is a drag the easiest fix is just to keep the fuel level above the hose section. After you drive it enough to figure out when you run out of gas just don't let it get that low. Or you could figure out about how many miles you can go before filling up again- just like you would with no gas gauge. In the meantime you could search the archives or check out the 700/900 FAQ's (under FEATURES at the top of this page) While the details in the FAQ's won't apply directly to your car it will be roughly the same procedure.
