Yes the plug needs to be removed. The side marker light fixture is deep enough that the back of it protrudes through the whole. So the plug must come out.

When I fished the wire back from the front fender, the wire actually came in outboard of that center panel (on both sides), so at first it appeared that the plug would not need to be removed, but it did.
