clutch cable 200

I was driving home from school today and i heard a popping sound and i was just like man my car is acting up again so i took it out of reverse and put it into first it did not make the noise again until about a 1/2 mile up the road I had it in first and then when i made the turn and pushed in the cluthch to shift into 2nd and my pedle stayed down and made the simular poping noise again i was in first i continued driving to my destination were i stalled my car in order to stop it i started poking around in order to see if i could see anything noticible wrong and the weight from behind the fork was haning there and i thought oh i lost the clutch spring but i thought i sould get it so i didnt lose it for once i replaced the spring but during further exemination i found that the clutch cable was severed from the u shapped connector that conects to the peddle assmbly the clutch cable and clutch spring were less than 6 months old. I did a m46 swap about 6 months ago i put a new piolet barring and used the clutch components that came with the tranny. So what I want to know is why did my cable break one thing else i forgot when doing the swap there was no hole for the cable so we just drilled one i always wondered if the sharp edges of the not perfectly round hole would eventualy cut through but again im not sure about much anymore.
thanks for any help
chuck jaxel
