Temp Gauge question 200

I have an 86 240. My temp gauge only goes up approx 1/8 of an inch while running the vehicle. What area, or how high on the meter, should the gauge be running if it is working properly? I have worked on the dash before to replace the tach, but I assume if there was a connection problem that the gauge would not work at all. Where is the sensor or wiring on the motor?

1. Where should temp gauge be once veh is warmed up
2. Where/what in the engine area should I check?

Thanks guys.
