Gang, I'm a bit confused by the answers I've been give so far... I'm pretty sure I toasted the rear differential in my 88 740gle, solid axle.
Some of the responsed I've recieved have said to replace the rear end... I'm not sure what you mean by that... do I replace the entire rear end assembly? ie, from one caliper to teh other caliper??
OR, can I just replace the differential sitting inside the rear end assembly?
It would seem easier to do that, but I may be completely wrong.
Is a differential replacement a bolt-in or does it have to be precisely set with backlash indicators, etc?
I've got SO much money wrapped up into this thing it would be a sorry shame to have to scrap it at this point.
From what I've read here... at least from what I understood, I can get a used ENTIRE rear end assembly for about $100... am I on the right track?
Thanks again for your advice.
Mike
