Temp gauge shudder 900 1993

My temp gauge needle sometimes (copule of times a month) suddenly and very quickly drops towards zero, then comes back quickly again. Goes on for a minute or two, then no problem. have only seen it when engine is warm (normal temp with needle straight up). Any ideas on debugging this, and to differentiate between sender problem or connector problem?
