Hello all--I'm in the process of tuning my rebuilt B18 and am facing a pinging under load that won't go away. This is a 9.5:1 comp, ratio, acheived with domed pistons, no modifications to the head. D cam, timed about 17 degrees BTDC; points are set to .018, plugs are NGK BP6ES gapped to .030. My next move will be to try NGK BP7ES's, hopefully the colder plug will help. But I'm wondering whether others running higher-compression motors are using octane boosters, and if so, what kinds they've found satisfactory. I experimented briefly with "Turner Labs" brand and was tempted to drain the gas tank immediately. Definitely an octane lowering additive...any suggestions? I'd like to find a long-term solution, and I don't want to trash this nice new engine in the process.
