Liftgate paint? 700

I have a 1985 745 Turbo and I have an interesting problem with the liftgate paint. Whe I bought the car, it was chipping away. Is this a common problem? It has gotten pretty bad, large chunks of the paint are flaking off down to the bare metal. I'd like to fix this myself if possible. Any suggestions? I don't know the exact color of the car, it is a brown/copper metallic. Does anyone know of a place that would carry this paint other than the dealer or a bodyshop?
