Search revealed life expectancy 60000 miles(Starkie,Randy)
Is that the average,is it a GM(AcDelco)product?
Car would not start, did crank on a rainy day few days ago, indy no appointment available for 2 days min.So towed to dealer. Before towing, swapped radio suppression relay with fan relay,no go.Changed fprelay(dated 1989 ?West Germany before reunification) to a previously inspected(with slit lamp biomicrscope) and found to be good soldered, almost new(1998 Hungarian) Fuel pump relay .No go.
According to FAQ,the next thing maybe the crank sensor which is difficult to get to on a cold and rainy day.
Service adviser guess:timing belt snapped,I thought unlikely, esp when the adviser told me it could have ruined my non interference design engine.
Dealer tech final diagnosis:no fuel pressure=faulty fuel pump(job accepted),advised to change to "updated" fuel pump relay (declined)and crank sensor(accepted) as well.
All inclusive fuel pump+crank sensor=750 Canadian(500 US$)
So if the fuel pump only lasts average 60 000 miles and I got 100,000 miles out of the orginal pump, not so bad OR did I get hosed and just needed a crank sensor?
Tom 1990 740 GL 160 000 kms(100 000 miles)
