air con us

i have a 940 turbo and the air con hasnt worked since i bought it i dont know if its out of gas or not or if the compressor is faulty in fact i dont know where to start is there any way of checking either without getting it filled with gas only to find it still doesnt work and being back to where i started only more out of pocket
