Thanks VERY much to all who gave suggestions as to what my Vo's problem might be. I was up at my mechanic's today. We were going to change the Vo's PS fluid, but the Mobil 1 ATF seems to be holding up well (clean), so we didn't change it. After we decided that, my mechanic started kicking my front tire (on the tread) and as he kicked it harder, we could hear what we though was the infamous 'clunk'. First we thought radius rod bushings. Then we listened closer (the hood was open). I kicked the tire while my mechanic tried to find the source of the noise. It appeared to be comming from the steering U-joints. Then we tried turning the steering wheel back and forth quickly a few degrees both ways (engine off) and the noise could be heard clearly. My mechanic pushed upward on one tirerod as I was turning the wheel. The noise went away! He concluded that it was rack end-play (worn rack bushings). We believe this is my 'clunk'. Both racks must have had that problem (quite likely). At least I know where the noise is comming from now and that it can do nothing but annoy me. Otherwise the rack is in good condition, so I'm not going to do anything about it right now. I may replace the rack with a new remanufactured, lifetime warranty one in the summer if I have the money to spare. Then, if I ever have this problem again, I can just send the rack back and get a new one :) Thanks again for everyone's help. This appears to be the cause of the 'clunk' (I hope it is), so if I replace the rack with a reman one in the future and the 'clunk' is still there, I'll let you know.........
