changing carpets

Well I ran into the right color carpets for my 1990 740 GL.
They came from a "97 960.
Had them cleaned and trimed them to size.
Tore out the old.... and then .....well they won't go up under the center console next to you legs.
They are a bit thicker due to padding or sound barrier foam but they should go in OK.
How do you release the panels of the center console so I can get the carpeting under them for a better fit?
