Additional tips: You may have difficulty locating where to re-insert the bulb holder. To locate the square hole try pushing your finger up until you make a square impression in your flesh. I've found it's easiest to work from the passsenger seat and to replace the bulb with the shifter in the R position (you'll want to use the over-ride button and remember to block your wheels). You may not be able to grasp the holder very well even with needle nose pliers, but you can carefully hold the wires close to the holder so you can pull/push straight up into the hole. If you are lucky enough to have one in your toolkit, a bent nose surgical clamp is even better than needle nose pliers. I just hope this little pain in the ass job wasn't some Volvo engineer's idea of a joke. Unless there's a "Volvo Special Tool" for this, I simply don't see a ham fisted mechanic easily getting this job done.

Once you've mastered this job you can move on to all the bulbs that are likely out in your dash. Lots of fun to find them all and then try to get at them. Not so much fun when you learn how much they cost. With effort they can probably all be done without removing any switches or switch panels, but if you need to it's best to push them out from the back side while depressing the outer side clips in order to avoid damage.
