How is the fluid condition and level? Is the shifter in alignment? Is it excessively wobbly? Is the transmission mount squashed so the shifter won't engage reverse?

It's hard to imagine your torque converter failed: they are fairly robust. It is virtually impossible to "squash" transmission lines. More background on the development of the symptoms is needed. What happened?
