Allen is correct, its just one of those mysteries. The subject of the dipstick reading comes up on this board a couple times a year. The answer is, use the SECOND reading.

FWIW, my 240 dipstick is dry on first try..second try, max full. I have driven the car for over 100k miles relying on the second reading...no problemos..
