Mike, I have done it the following way about 25 times:
Loosen each nut a full turn at a time, starting at one end of the camshaft. Check that each time you have gone over the full lenght of the cam, the bearing-caps spring-up tight against the nuts. For those that don't, tap gently on the sides of the bearing-cap until they free and move up. Do that over and over again until all bearing caps feel loose and the nuts can be unscrewed by hand and the cam taken out.
The cam would never sproing in your face (pinched fingers maybe) but that procedure ensures the cam will not be subjected to uneven pressures that might bend it out of specs.
