In my '80 245, I can hear the fuel pump kick in as well when I start it. I can also hear it come on when I put the key in the second position (II) before cranking it.
I had a problem with the fuse as well a while back. There was this strange smell coming from the fuse box. Looking closer, I saw that the fuel pump fuse was half melted! While I was checking, I saw a spark jump across the fuse, never a good sign.
When I was having the problem, the car would just quit every once and a while. Usually it would be from a cold start, and not while the car was running. Still, after replacing the half melted fuse, (and giving the fuse box a good cleaning) I haven't had any problems.
I would take out all the fuses, and clean all the contacts with a wire brush. MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AT THE (-) TERMINAL FIRST! Don't forget that step! After you brush off the contacts, pinch the connectors a little bit, but not too much. If you bend them too much, you will either break the tabs, or it will be very difficult to replace the fuses.
I would also reccomend getting the newer fuse types, I forget what they are called, but they are fuses with the filament encased in glass (instead of just laying across the fuse exposed.)
You might also try hooking up the fuel pump to fuse # 14. On my DL, 14 is a spare I believe, but that might not be the case on your GL. This might help you isolate the problem as well.
Hope this helps.
