Hey Gil:
What a drag. My mechanics instructor taught me to put a film of silicone grease on both sides of the gasket. Then put the gasket in place and the water pump over the gasket. Then if you have to "jiggle" the waterpump to put it in place it slides over the gasket rather than tearing it or pushing it out of the way. Worked for me.
