If someone has never owned a Volvo wagon, I don't think it occurs to them that some tailgates never needs to be slammed. I found I have to be very protective of my car's and be prepared to leap out of the car to close it any time someone else is going to load or unload from the back. Even telling them not to slam is often not good enough, they just cannot believe that it takes so little effort! Yes, it made me shudder when I was not quick enough to avoid a slam. I do take a smug pleasure in demonstrating why it was not necessary to slam by bringing the door down to about two inches away from the latch and then letting go - presto it closes and latches perfectly every time, and it is a 23 year old 240!
