Is it a little blue rectangular box that looks like a relay? And possibly even has an M printed on it? If it does, it is a seat belt alarm. It's rather odd that it'd be in your trunk. Maybe the PO had it replaced and left the old one in the trunk. Maybe they yanked it out because it was too noisy.
