Happy New Year to all at Brickboard! Following editor Ringlee's recommendation in 700/900 FAQ "Heating and Air Conditioning", I will put an Airsept screen in the A/C on my cars, '95 960 and '86 760T. At the Airsept website, there is a manual with instructions to put their screen in the suction hose at the compressor. A seach for "Airsept" at www.jcsonlinetoolshed.com shows the kit (P/N AIR67650 sold for $66.65 with installation and removal tools and four screens each in sizes 5/8 and 3/4 inch and 19mm. Airsept emailed me that will come out this year with a kit with screens in eight sizes that will cover 90% of cars on the road. In the meantime, who will share his experience putting in the Airsept 5/8 or 3/4 inch or 19mm screens in the 960 or 760T A/C? Particularly, I need to know which screens fit and where they fit. For instance, I thought it best to put the screen in the line at the inlet to the condenser before compressor failure and in the suction hose at the compressor, like Airsept recommends, after compressor failure. Before compressor failure, a screen at the inlet to the condenser would trap debris before it contaminates the condenser and other components. After compressor failure, a screen at the suction side of the compressor would prevent debris in the system from entering the new compressor. A while back I posted here at Brickboard and had replies from Stephen Ringlee and Chris Herbst as I remember that I thought one could do preventive maintenance on the A/C evacuating R134, draining and replacing PAG or ester oil, putting in or replacing an Airsept screen, putting in a new orifice valve or variable orifice valve, drawing a vacuum and putting in new R134 perhaps with dye to alert right away about leaks before these can do any harm. As per the Volvo manual, not even the accumulator bottle would have to be changed everytime if one closes the lines within ten minutes of being opened. Indeeed, one could close them immediately with a cap or tape to have time to do what service is required. Trouble and expense should not be too much to do the above maintenance periodically, perhaps every two or three years, at about two hours of labor and the cost of R134, PAG or ester oil, an orifice valve or VOV and a screen from the Airsept kit. The kit comes with four screens in each of above three sizes and replacement packs with five screens in one of the above sizes cost $15 at www.jcsonlinetoolshed.com It occurs to me that trouble and expense for such periodic maintenance would be less than for compressor and "firewall forward" replacement, say every six to eight years. See "black death" and "firewal forward" replacement at www.ackits.com Please, let me know what you tink. Best regards to all.
