Which 240?

There are only 2 transmissions from '85 on auto and manual. Unlike Saab, Volvo only made 2 types (I think Saab did like 4 or 5, cool cars - wierd company). As far as my luck with 80's volvos, the automatics are solid as long as they are taken care of. I never have had a manual, hard to find anyway, but with those you are more likely to have more repair done to it with the clutch system, like any manual.

The AC question you have, I am not sure about, I don't use AC much in MN, it's already cold enough here year round.

Between IPD and Brickboard, you will have plenty of advice for maintainence and repair issues with your older Volvo, once you pick one out. The nice thing about the 240's, even 740's is that they were pretty much the last Volvos made with a pretty simple, less computerized engine system, therefore easier for the common ape to work on them.

Best of luck,
Chuck
