air temperture sensor fault

the intake temperature sensor and MAP sensor give the computer similar signals as the airflow meter would. Since the IAT sensor doesn't fail much, you could try cleaning the connections and resetting the code (if you haven't done it yet) and thereafter, shop used for that part. They hardly ever fail, so they should be readily available.

Also as mentioned, check the MAP sensor vacuum line. Sooty tailpipe shouldn't really result just from a bad intake air temp reading. It might be a MAP sensor problem dumping too much fuel.
