Windshield washer relay question

Susan -

Saw your post just today. Hope things are OK. Foster is spot on (as usual) with the relay location. I have the Volvo Wiring book for 1984 240, your 1983 is likely the same.

There are two delay relays, both in about the same place. The difference looks like the number of wires connected the each one. The front relay has six leads to its base, the rear relay has eight.

The front washer and wiper are powered off fuse #2, and the rear is fuse #1.

Since they are so different, I think your failure is non-electrical. BTDT.

The motors can be removed from the fluid tank. I took the wires off, the tubes off, and removed the tank with motors attached. It seemed easier, and very little fluid drained out. Plus, it was easy to see how the motors are attached. Rather like a bathroom towel rack angled anchor.

The motor can be disassembled. I did that, and found hard water deposits had jammed up the little pump gears. Cleaned it out, put a little grease on the pump shaft, reassembled, all runs OK.

Since I am blessed with double the normal self-sufficiency genes, going to a recycle yard did not occur to me. But that could be a much easier route.

Good Luck,

Bob
