Help! Had Heat then No Heat

I would suspect the control valve that the cable is attached too. I assume you have checked to see that the lever on the valve moves when you turn the knob. I have not had to change on on my Volvos, but on my SAAB I have had the shaft in the valve snap off. I would also check the heater hoses under the intake. It is possible that the previous owner bypassed the heater core because it was leaking. If your radiator hoses heat up there is probably nothing wrong with the engines thermostat.
