Diesel

No offence, but it's the sort of question which if you need to ask, you probably can't do it. No one as far as I know makes a kit so you have to engineer your own. With this stuff its all the little details that start to nickel and dime you to death.

If you seriously want to do it find a rear wheel drive smallish diesel. The VW is out, all front drive so you immediately have gearbox problems. Diesel 3 series BMW, Mercedes 190, something of that ilk and drop as much as you can into your car. The Volvo 240 and 700 used a VW diesel, but its a big 6 cylinder and hasn't got the greatest reputation, it may be another route.

If you look on Ebay there are some decent looking Mercedes 240 diesels for not that much money. Often engine rebuild kind of money. If you want transport in a reasonable time scale, buy a car. If you want the challenge and fun of doing the job, that's a whole different ball game.

Regards

Pete
