Oil light comes on and stays on after switch is turned off 200 1993

Our 240 wagon after returning home from a normal drive started billowing a grey cloud (my daughters description) from under the hood. Checked out the car. Oil is full and clean (last oil change less than 1000 miles ago), coolant reservior empty. Engine runs good sounds good and there is lots of oil splashing around the camshaft. Added some water and let run for a few minutes but there is no pressure on the water pump hoses nor is the engine pulling water from the reservior. Sounds like the water pump to me or maybe the thermostat. One thing that perplexs me is that the oil light comes on after the key is turned off but when engine is started it goes off. Owners manual sez: "Tow to dealership!!!" I like turning my own wrenches but what does this mean?
