Early B-230FTs are renowned for piston slap; I don't think squirting oil in the cylinders will diagnose it, though. I ignore mine, except to use it to frighten other car folks. My hot-rod friend says to turn up the radio, and it works.
The rubber washers, sure enough, are to quiet the valve train.
