Having trouble starting...need to fix.

I am having trouble starting my '78 242DL. When I get in to start her up it sounds like it wants to start, but won't catch. After trying for about five to ten minutes it will finally catch, but will die if I stop giving it gas. If anyone can help with what it is and how to fix it, it will be greatly appreciated.
