Temperature Sensor 700 1990

Folks,

I recently replaced the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT) on my '90 760T. After doing so, I cleared the engine diagnostic codes (1-1-2 and 2-3-4) and the "check engine" light has not re-energized. However, to my horror, I today
discovered that the temperature guage has failed... rather, its not working.

I'll be honest here: I'm an aircooled VW guy by hobby and experience, so all this water stuff represents a steep learning curve for me. Is there any way replacing the ECT could be related to my now defunct temperature guage?

What tests can I perform? Detailed instructions are preferred and appreciated, as I only have the Chilton's (and we all know how much wasted paper that thing is...)

Cheers!
