Air conditioning

Going through an unplanned engine overhaul in my 93 240 wagon. Obviously, the AC system will be violated and will vent. Anybody been through updating the AC system to the new R-12, or whatever it is called. Appreciate any suggestions, this seems like a perfect time to update the AC, and yes to those of you who might ask, we do use the AC system in Alaska.
