B230FT engine ticking noise when cold...

I have a 1990 740 Turbo with approximately 162,000 miles. I started the car this morning and let it idle about 40 seconds and began driving at low speeds, as the engine climbed in RPMs the car made a noticeable ticking noise...sounded a like a muffled sewing machine. I believe the air temperature was in the 40 degree F range this morning.

Any guesses on what is causing the noise ?
