process for hooking sub

i bought a sub 500 watt i have an amp and a cross over network question is do i hook wire going from amp to crossover then sub or crossover amp sub?? thanks oh yea any of you have a suggestion of what way i shoul face subs in trunk i.e. side inside trunk lid etc. Thank you!
