Hi all, I am trying to pin down an intermittent starting problem on my 1990-745T, and I think it is the starter, but was hoping to get a little feedback before I go ripping it off the car:)
It only seems to happen on the hottest of days, but is not described by the hot start problems I saw discussed in the FAQ...
Symptom: When I turn the key, I hear the starter solenoid "click", but the starter does not turn. If I repeatedly try it the sucker will eventually turn and the car will start. It is not an engine or spark problem...definitely just the starter not turning.
Thoughts: The starter is a rebuilt unit I bought recently. I have also recently replaced the negative and positive battery cables, thinking it was a cable related problem (i.e. not enough currrent). After changing the cables, things did indeed seem better, but just today the problem recurred (darn intermittent problems, you never know if they are really fixed!). I have a brand new battery and crank sensor, so its not those items... The only other possibility I could think of would be the ignition switch? Would it allow the starter solenoid to click but not to turn? Or am I perhaps hearing a relay and not the starter solenoid (its a very loud "click", and it does not repeat, so I really do think its the starter solenoid I hear).
Any help? My current plan is to return the starter since it is under warranty, and if things continue to happen I will try the ignition switch...
Thanks!
Vos
