what is that small pipe threaded into the exhaust manifold?

Very interesting. On my girlfriend's car ('89 740 190K) I keep waiting for the EGR to give me problems but it hasn't. I've been planning on just ripping it out when it does. Didn't know that was a common "fix". Have no idea how we ended up with a car in NC that has this contraption, as I thought only CA cars had it equipped from the factory. I've never seen any other volvo (out of about 25 that I have worked on) have the EGR setup.
