If you do not have the two different colored sockets, you may have the wrong socket on one side.
This can cause all sorts of ills because the contacts are different sizes and in different locations. You can even produce plastic-melting short circuits if you are very unlucky.
The symptoms that you describe are similar to ground problems, consistent with the wrong sockets.
The first time I tried to fix a bad bulb on my 1989 740 Turbo, I swapped the bulbs from side to side - things got worse!
I spent several hours trying to troubleshoot the problem, including removing both taillights and taking them completely apart and cleaning all contacts before I noticed that the sockets were different on each side. I swapped them back and found the offending bulb in a few minutes.
