why does it wait so long to shift into OD

I have an 86 240dl wagon and it used to always shift into OD at around 43mph. Now it waits until around 53mph. Unless I press the pedal to the floor and let it up real quick, then it shifts up. It also seems to drop out of OD a little sooner also. I changed the kickdown cable, replaced the trans fluid with the two trans radiator lines method ,the OD switch on gear selector functions normally, cleaned and checked fuse. Is it the relay ? Other gears shift like they always have. 1st to 2nd has always been a little hard.
I have read about "check balls" in the tranny being replaced, what is that, do I have to drop the tranny to do it?
Thanks Vernon
