I use a screwdriver as well. If you tried to get them out and were unsuccessful I'm surprised you didn't damage the seals enough for them to leak. In fact if you did try to get them out and they do not leak now you were not aggressive enough in your efforts to remove them.
The blade of the screwdriver slips in past the lip of the seal and then you slide the blade up behind the edge of the face. The seal outer edge (while it may be covered with a softer material) is actually metal and the blade edge is actually able to push the seal out from behind. Just be careful not to mar the surface of the shaft (cam or crank).
