Hi!
After reading a few things about the various weaknesses of the M47, I figured I'd better check the trans in our '91 and see how things looked. The good news: no leaks, the trans was overfilled, and the fluid was still "somewhat" reddish--didn't notice any silvery-metallic look to it at all . The (possible) bad news: the magnetic drain plug looked like a licorice ice-cream cone . . . there was a half-rounded lump of very fine, dark gray ferrous material on the end of the plug. It looked like it would have the consistency of flour if one were to dry it out.
I'm planning to refill it with a synthetic in a few weeks, but for now I refilled it with dino-typeF to clean things up a little before putting in the good stuff.
So far, the trans has been good--nice and quiet, easy to shift, etc., but with almost 205K, how many more miles can I expect? Should I start scouting the yards for possible replacement(s)? Anything else I should do/look for to extend it's life?
Thanks in advance,
Steve A-
